Happy New Year La Cruz Mexico!

La Cruz Mexico Celebrates New Year’s Eve

Hola La Cruz Mexico and beyond. What a beautiful place to live. The Banderas Bay is so amazing. The jungles meet the oceans making the Riviera Nayarit so very special.  A handful of friends and myself paddle boarded from Punta de Mita out to the Marietta Islands on the 26th. Large schools of dolphins, fish and whales were sighted. My friends husband followed us in their Catamaran, picking us up at the Marietta islands and we had a lovely afternoon on the bay. (That’s me far right.) I am feeling so very blessed. Get outside and have some holiday fun! There are so many options available.
As Christmas Day has passed with friends, parties, good food and entertainment at your favorite restaurant, these same restaurants are getting ready for the big New Year’s Eve celebrations. (view below) The big finale around the Banderas Bay with more firework shows than I have ever seen at one time will be lighting up the skies to bring in the New Year at midnight with parties going until dawn; also with single firework shows each night from the 25th to the 30th. The super comfortable Chica Locca has nightly bay tours serving sushi and national drinks all inclusive.  Email for more information and reservations.

RED or YELLOW  FOR NEW YEAR’S LUCK? Mexico also several New Years traditions, one being  whether to wear red or yellow underwear. These underwear need to be new for the New Year!  Those who wear yellow are believed to have luck with money in the coming year. and red are believed to have luck in love. Maybe I can find a red and yellow combo pair! Another Mexican tradition is when the clock strikes midnight eating 12 grapes representing good luck for each month.  Now, although the Mexican nationals do celebrate New Year’s Eve, the Christmas celebrations are not quite over yet!

El Dia de Los Reyes
Christmas continues in the Mexican tradition with El Dìa de Los Reyes (Three Kings Day.)  where the children receive presents is January 6th in remembrance of when the kings Reyes Mago, Melchor, Gaspar and Baltazar came to Bethlehem bringing gifts of gold, frankincense, and the Christ child in the manger. Another and older tradition is when before going to bed that night, children place their old shoes on the windowsill, where the Wise Men leave them their presents. Today the shoes are not always put out on the sill, but the younger children in each family still receive gifts from the Three Kings on this day.
On that evening of January 6th, (the 12th night), everyone enjoys hot chocolate with cinnamon and vanilla. A large sweet bread shaped in a ring called Rosca de Reyes is served. Inside a small usually plastic doll that represents baby Jesus is hidden. The person who gets the piece with the “baby Jesus” is responsible for bringing the tamales for the party of El Dia de la Candelaria, or Candlemas, on February 2nd. It is then that the nativity scene of the wise men and baby Jesus is stored away until next year and everyone feasts on the tamales and a corn drink called Atole, and the Christmas season is officially over.

La Cruz Mexico Holiday Season

La Cruz Mexico folks (and beyond) enjoyed the annual Amigos de La Cruz “Welcome Back” party that took place this last Wednesday evening (Dec. 3rd)  at Roberto’;s Xocolati’ La Cruz restaurant. What an amazing view of the bay and La Cruz Marina! Chris Bouchard from Villa Amor del Mar / La Cruz Mexico was the MC for the fiesta, with his wife Cindy taking care of the silent auction. Thanks to Lori Wilson and all of the Amigo volunteers that helped make this night possible! Myself and the ladies were running around selling the 50/50 raffle tickets to which the winner won over 6000 pesos! The evening began with the amazing Tatewari Trio playing Flamenco music. Mimi, Easu and Danny were all born and raised in our little pueblo of La Cruz de Huanacaxtle Mexcio!  Sonny is usually on the drums during the high season but could not make it this evening.
Saxophone and flute extraordinaire Grammy winning musician Bryan Savage came on stage for the second half of the evening dazzling us with his original music as he floated through the crowd playing his sax.
Dinner of Fajitas with all of the fixins was excellent with the chicken tender and juicy, as well as the steak cooked perfectly. Dinner was served in rounds which kept everything fresh and hot. The place was packed to the giills!

The Amigos de La Cruz is in the process of getting its paperwork updated to meet with new regulations and is actively seeing donations for its new Adopt A Highway program in which the Amigos has adopted the stretch of highway from OXXO to the bridge. Donations will help the Amigos provide regular maintenance of the medians in an effort to present a clean and cheerful welcome to the town.  The Amigos also needs volunteers to assist with its environmental and medical programs. Anyone interested in donating, volunteering, or becoming or renewing their memberships (only 250 pesos) can contact the Amigos de La Cruz at

Las Palapas Grill is a La Cruz beach restaurant who have re-opened and are planning on staying open all year around, which is AWESOME for us crazy full time La Cruz Mexico locals!  Previously known as the “Tres Palapas,”, former owner Ewe and his family had to leave, which left his partner Luciano to continue or not. So the new “Las Palapas Grill” has the same owner, as well as the same great chef and staff!
Live music with a PV band called the “Hangars” plays every Sunday beginning at 7pm. They play some different tunes than some of the other local bands like Johnny Cash and Neil Diamond..and other good classic rock songs you can dance to that I have not heard in a while.
Sundays drink special is 2X1 margaritas any way you like…ME? I am all about Mango Margaritas lately, Although I did try Fernando’s regular margarita the other day and it was really good! To quote Fernando, “The best margaritas in La Cruz Mexico!”.  They also are still serving their famous loster and have daily food speials. Wednesdays live music with the “What’s Up Band”  with Andrea getting the crowd going as they rock the palapa!  They also have food specials and good pricing on their menu.

Many folks are asking how to get to Las Palapas Grill. The easiest way is to take the main hwy headed out to Punta de Mita, past the stop light. When you see the large speed bump (tope) make a left towards the ocean. The veggie Nayarit market (an awesome veggie market) is on the left. Go to the end of the street; it turns into a dirt road and the dry rivier bed. Go right at the sign and down to the playa. You may also get there from the playa; its about 6 minute walk from the La Cruz town square. Facil ! (easy) :D

Ana Banana Bar and Grill has “Rock ‘n’ Roll Donny and the 5 Months Blind Band” for Coffee House Friday beginning at 7pm playing fun dance music like “Johnny Be Good”. Other musicians also come up to play…Ya never know WHO is going to show up!
Saturday Brunch with live music… A new breakfast / brunch and live music with guitarist Ralph form the Rhythm Roosters from 8:30 – 11am .  A good way to start the day!
Every Sunday is Rib Night!  come on over for the What’s Up Band with Adriana singing all of our favorite songs! (photo left)

Meatloaf Monday
brings on the Classic Rock Jam with “The Good Stuff”. (photo right) Lead singer Andra has come a long way in only one year and sounds fabulous! They play ALL the favorite classic rock and really rock the house! The homemade meatloaf is juicy and served with all the comfort style fixins.
R&R Hardly Strictly Blues Band play every Wednesday with the food special Beer, Brats, Beans and Burgers. Come relax and enjoy some blues.

I would like to finish the post with a link to my friend Cindy Bouchard’s post, who owns Villa Amor del Mar in La Cruz Mexico with her husband Chris. She recently wrote a very cute “He said, She said” article for her blog. Click on the link and scroll down a bit for the article.
If your interested in more information about relocating to the Riviera Nayarit / Bandeas Bay area its an excellent read and I recommend Chris Bouchard for your real estate needs! Enjoy!

Riviera Nayarit Tours Altavista Petroglyphs

petroglyphtours_goldThe Altavista Petroglyphs, located on the Riviera Nayarit, Mexico, are part of an intriguing archaeological site northeast of La Penita. Identified locally as ”La Pila del Rey,” the site is one of the largest known concentrations of stone engravings (petroglyphs), containing over 2,000 on 200 acres.  Although less than half of them can be seen through the jungle brush, enough are visible that make this site worth visiting. Altavista is hidden in the mountains of the Riviera Nayarit along Las Piletas Creek of El Copo volcano. Only an hour and a half away from the Banderas Bay, the Altavista Petroglyphs are amazing and a must see on your Riviera Nayarit vacation. Please use our easy contact form to connect with us.
